December 2006:

You may have read about the new Kids Against Hunger satellite that has been set up in Lincoln (NE) last month. We are so excited to see our feeding network growing all across the USA, and were thrilled to be able to set up another new food packaging satellite a few weeks ago: Kids Against Hunger - Central Indiana, located in Carmel (IN). Both of these satellites are the first ones of their kind in Lincoln and Indiana.

In addition to setting up food packaging satellites, Kids Against Hunger has also recently introduced the concept of regional food packaging divisions. With the first one already successfully operating in Mankato (MN) we are now setting up a second division in Tulsa (OK).

October 2006:

The Kids Against Hunger food packaging network keeps growing and we are very excited about it! On September 16th, 2006, we set up a Kids Against Hunger satellite in Nebraska. It is located in Lincoln and is already showing great potential. We are also in the process of starting up satellites in California and Indiana.

In the last few months, we have shipped 355,000 meals to Haiti and 285,000 meals to Iraq, and we are currently working on additional shipments to Haiti. We are also providing our highly nutritious food to the Community Emergency Assistance Program in Minneapolis, MN, every month.

Here are some news from our Kids Against Hunger Division in Mankato, MN:

"Richard has wanted to have people package in jails for some years now. This is finally made possible through our Pilot Prison Program in the Blue Earth County Jail. Volunteers have packaged over 70,000
meals so far in just a few months! This may be the first prison program of its kind and we hope to expand
it nationwide.

Also, we just finished a city-wide packaging in Waseca, MN, where we had four food packaging stations set up and volunteers packaging for about seven hours making close to 40,000 meals. Way to go, Waseca!

I have a volunteer who comes in almost every day for six to ten hours - packaging meals. Being retired allows her the hours to spend as she pleases, and she has chosen to package meals with us. She packages about ten boxes of food each day - that's 2,160 meals. I even caught her here on a Sunday! What a blessing!

We are having a fundraiser planned for December 2nd which will include an “Outrageous” omelet feed from 8:00 a.m. until noon, with an auction following!

There always seems to be so much going on, we always want to do so much. There is so much need. But it’s good to be able to look at what you have done and rejoice. “Wow, look what has been done.” Now let us press on, and not grow weary in well doing. God bless you all, and may you continue to be able to do as much good as is possible."                 - Tim Stromer

August 2006:

We have made it even more convenient for you to donate to Kids Against Hunger. You can now select from any of these options:

July 2006:

The volunteers of the Kids Against Mankato Division are known for their dedication and commitment to help feeding children, and they keep finding creative ways to contribute. This month, two nice young gentleman are involved with Kids Against Hunger as their service project. They are trying to raise funds to help pay for the thousands of meals that the Mankato packaging center packs every year.

Your help is needed to raise those funds. The two gentlemen will be working the “Wiener Wagon” at the Cub West store located at 1200 South Riverfront Drive in Mankato, MN, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28th, Saturday, July 29th, and Sunday , July 30th.  All you need to do is to stop by and eat so that others can. They will be serving hot dogs, brats, and burgers.

Also, they have placed an aluminum can collection receptacle at the Downtown HyVee parking lot at 410 South Riverfront Drive in Mankato. Bring your cans there and help feed the kids. Each pound of cans will pay for about 3 ½ meals!!! Any support you can give them for these two projects will be greatly appreciated.

The Grand Opening event of Kids Against Hunger’s new Mankato Division, 5 to 5 for 365, didn’t reach it’s stated goal of making 365,000 meals in 24 hours of continuous packaging – it far surpassed it with an astounding 480,000 meals! Check out this link to read about how Kids Against Hunger Mankato "reaches a milestone".

More News:

Thanks to Project Handclasp, Kids Against Hunger food will get to more children at a lower cost. Established in 1962 by the U.S. Navy, Project Handclasp’s mission is to, “collect and make distribution of humanitarian, educational and goodwill materials”. The Navy ships carrying Kids Against Hunger food will not only transport it to the destination port, but also unload and deliver the food to the sites where children are fed. This greatly improves our ability to safely, reliably, and cost-effectively get our food to those who most need it.

Richard Proudfit and I met with Commander Charles Tevelson, recently retired director of the program, and Tevelson’s successor, Paul Brown, at Project Handclasp’s base in San Diego, California to launch the new partnership between our organizations. Thanks to the hospitality of Commander Tevelson and Mr. Brown we had the pleasure of touring the USS Pinckney, a new generation Navy destroyer, and the USS Mercy, a 1,000 bed floating hospital.

We found our way to Project Handclasp through Lt. Colonel John McQuary, a retired Marine pilot who is involved with the Kids Against Hunger satellite in Honolulu (HI). Lt. Colonel McQuary used his military connections to bring our two organizations together. In another providential coincidence, the new Kids Against Hunger – San Diego satellite is preparing to start operations in July 2006, giving Project Handclasp a nearby and easily accessible supply source.

A forty foot container (40 pallets) was shipped April 13 to San Diego where it will be loaded onto the USS Mercy, a hospital ship whose mission is to perform medical services for the peoples of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. At each port-of-call during its mission the Mercy will deliver our food to schools, clinics, and other sites where children go hungry.

We believe that this partnership is a blessing in the truest sense and gives Kids Against Hunger the ability to reach even more children.

March 2006:

Kids Against Hunger will be conducting a 24 hour food packaging marathon called "5 to 5 for 365" starting at 5:00 p.m. on March 24, and ending at 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2006. This event will take place at the Kids Against Hunger Division at 500 Patterson Avenue in Mankato, Minnesota. The goal of this event is to feed 1,000 children in Tanzania for one year (hence the name "5 to 5 for 365"). We are encouraging the residents of Mankato and the surrounding communities to volunteer their time and resources to help achieve this goal. We are currently signing up volunteer teams and sponsors for the event. Get your organization, church, club, school, family, or business involved and make a difference in the lives of many people.

Want to volunteer?     Want to be a sponsor?       Call Tim Stromer, the Director of Kids Against Hunger Mankato at (507) 387-1390 or e-mail him at tim@kidsagainsthunger to schedule your group and for additional information.

January 2006:

A Time to Look Back and to Look Forward

As 2005 closes and we begin a new year, it seems a good time to reflect on what was accomplished in the year past and our goals for 2006.

Our mission, of course, is to feed children. We worked hard towards that mission in 2005.

Kids Against Hunger packaged and shipped a total of 8.5 million meals in 2005, of which 1.3 million meals came from the headquarters in New Hope, MN, and the new division in Mankato, MN. We added 5 new packaging satellites and one division to the network.

Kids Against Hunger's meals were shipped to the following countries in 2005: Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Liberia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Mozambique, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and the USA.

2005 will be remembered as a year of disaster relief, both at home and abroad. The Kids Against Hunger network quickly rallied and shipped over 1.5 million meals to Hurricane Katrina stricken gulf coast communities. We also helped to feed the families left homeless by the devastating Pakistani earthquake, although much work remains to be done there. 2005 also saw the emergence of even greater cooperation among satellites. Perhaps the leading example of this was Minnesota’s West Metro and Central Iowa satellites working together to package meals for Floyd and Kathy Hammer’s development projects in Tanzanian villages.

Th e regional division initiative launched in 2005, and continuing into 2006 and beyond will create both greater capacity and operating efficiencies for our network. The strategy is to place large packaging and distribution facilities in major population centers with good access to transportation. Each division would serve double duty as a high volume packaging facility and distribution center. Satellites within the division’s region will be serviced by the division’s distribution center.

2006 will be a watershed year for Kids Against Hunger as we continue to build our packaging capacity and find new sources of funding. Our four objectives for 2006 are:

1. Expand capacity and improve operating efficiencies. We will expand the Mankato Division and launch an additional regional division. We will open 5 new satellites.

2. Deliver better support to existing satellites. Provide inventory management and fundraising and communi-cations programs for satellites.

3. Grow income through fundraising programs and earned income. We will continue to develop fundraising programs and include satellites in them. We will explore selling our food to other relief and emergency preparedness agencies and use the proceeds to package food for donation.

4. Help children to thrive, not merely to survive. We will work with NGOs (non-governmental organizations) that offer economic and community development programs to the families we feed so that they can move from dependence to independence.

Looking back, it has been a year full of blessings and fulfillment of God’s promise. Looking forward, we see even greater opportunities to serve if we are faithful, focused, and open to God’s guiding spirit. Thanks for all you have done in 2005 and all that you will do in 2006.
